Woman loses 2 million dollars in dating fraud
An American woman from Texas has been swindled out of 2 million dollars via Facebook.
One day she was contacted by a man called Charlie, who introduced himself as the friend of a friend. The 50-year-old woman, who had marital problems, was happy someone wanted to talk to her. “He said all the right things and said he wanted to get to know me better. We formed a real bond.”
After a while, Charlie said that he had problems and began asking her for money. Blinded by love and despite having never met him, the woman went along with Charlie’s requests several times. In the end, she gave him a total of 2 million dollars.
However, the police investigation revealed that Charlie was a fake profile fronting a Nigerian gang of scammers. In 2016, the FBI in America received around 15 000 reports of online dating fraud, representing a total amount in excess of 230 million dollars.
